In November of 1994, The Source Magazine released 2 separate covers for their Redman issue. What made this issue unique and highly discussed was that one cover had Reggie sporting a wadded up tissue in his nostril, and the other, more snot friendly pic, just had him peering over his locs, looking like he didn’t want the shot used for anything, let alone the cover of the then highly respected Source Magazine.

There was a lot of talk amongst me and my 13 year old friends concerning why he had the tissue in his nose, and the most popular reason was that “Redman has A.I.D.S.”.

During a time where immediate answers can be found at a glance on Google or search on Wikipedia, digging is downloadable and footage is as findable as a peruse on YouTube, it’s difficult to find an active Hip-Hop head who cares to be a fan of this culture for their own reasons outside of past times and popularity.

The Meaning Of Dope looks to stand as a respectable ground hosting some of this culture’s past prize moments and memories, spanning from videotaped classics to street team S.W.A.G., and from personal stories as active fans experiencing Hip-Hop’s “Golden Era”, to posting mix-tapes from a time when they needed to meet two criteria - mixing, and being on tape.

We pride ourselves on putting young cats onto shit they’re guaranteed to have never seen live, and giving some nostalgic sparks to the older heads who feel that time has spoiled their art.
