O.K people, I had to drop a serious gem this time. You really can’t talk about hip hop in Toronto without mentioning the name Ron Nelson.

These two clips are from when he appeared on Much. Follow Ron on his journey through “the most historic house in North York Willowdale”. Look out carefully for Thrust in the cut.

Big shout to Doug on the footage!

This is amazing. Ron is the best dude, hands down. He’s the reason I got serious about what I was listening to, and subsequently, spinning records.
You guys have won me for life; real talk.

  4. Soy Says:

He used to DJ my middle school dances in the early 1980’s and used to listen him on the radio. Good to see people giving him his props.

wanna send a strong shout out to everyone who has shown us support in our first month doin this shit. without individuals like Ron Nelson, we probably wouldn’t have much to talk about in terms of being fans of this Hip-Hop shit out here in Toronto, and without individuals like all ya’ll showing love, we wouldn’t know whether showing this brother some due respect mattered to anyone else.

    we got u, trust us.

Big Up Toronto’s Hip Hop History. KRS gave Ron a shout out a few weeks back when he was performing at the opera house for canadian music week. Keep representing that T-Dot shit.

Speaking of Toronto Hip Hop, would you happen to have Split Personality - I Don’t Know CD from 1993? I have both 12″s and cannot find their album which was CD Only anywhere. I even contacted Ragga J himself about a copy but no luck. Any help is appreciated…

What you need to do (be…I’m talking to you, LOL!!!) is pin him down now, and get and an interview. It would in good to get his perspective on things in this present day and time.

I took a Hip-Hop “History” course @ York he created and lectured…he has the best stories about shows in Toronto from back in the day…I think he’s still Part-time faculty York, so check the Music Department there if you wanna talk to the legend himself…last time I talked to him a couple years ago he was working on organizing and DJing reggae-vibed events and parties.

The man is a musical genius in every way you never thought of, no doubt.

  12. Fameless Says:

i took that same course a few years back. good shit.

I stumbled across this site while doing some research on Ron Nelson for my photo exhibition for black history month 2013 “The Visual Evolution of Dancehall Culture in Toronto” . I loved the prophesy made by Mr. Nelson “Look out for Dancehall/Reggae it’s going to be big”. Great call Ron.
