There were 3 segments on RapCity that I’d say were very important in my taking b-boying seriously in the early to mid 90’s and through to 2000 before I realized I was probably better suited to pursue a career as a designer as opposed to a professional dancer - this clip right here, another one of Ghettoriginals at Harbourfront, and Bag o’ Trix when they had them green tracksuit joints on.

Cassingles: Rugged Neva Smoove

Long before iTunes, MySpace music pages and Napster, there were about 3 ways to get your filthy little paws on dope music before the other kids in your class without having to cop the rest of the bullshit album:

1) Stay home on Saturday afternoon and sit by the radio, hand on the dial, soon as you hear it pump up the volume… and don’t forget to press play and record on your tape player to get your advanced copy of shit that won’t hit stores for another 2 or 3 months. Shout out to Maxell cassettes.

2) Go to Play De Record, Traxx, or to see Apple (Toronto heads know what the bizness is) for the newest S&S, Clue, Ron G, Tony Touch, etc, etc, mixtapes for the “Exclusive - sclusive - lusive - sive” shit that you would later dub for half your homies. Shout out to Maxell cassettes.

or

3) Find a shop that sells “Cassingles”. Yeah, I said it. “Cassingles”, the fine inventive product of merging the words “cassette” and “single.”

A young Skateboard P has some production credits on this track, which explains why the beat was so damn catchy.

Wreckx N Effect aka the reason why Q-Tip has hearing loss in one ear performing 1 verse of Wreckx Shop and Rumpshaker at the end of In Living Color.

If I ever get the chance to interview Jim Carrey, all I’m asking him about is every performance at the end of I.L.C. that he was there wildin’ out for.

It’s still awesome that mainstream America didn’t know what Pum Pum was and this song was a commerical monster.

Watch for the spelling mistake on Evil Dee’s title. wow.

If there were ever a reason to call a video subversive or yank it from the airwaves, I would imagine hanging a fake Saddam Hussein might be a good one.

I guess that’s why this version of the video isn’t anywhere on the internet and it only aired once in Canada. Luckily I was taping…but I won’t be surprised if this post mysteriously disappears. Mc Breed-Alternate version of Ain’t No Future In Yo Frontin.

The fact that this video isn’t on YouTube right now is a damn shame.

Rascalz - Really Livin is a certified classic Canadian video. This is back in the days when Red1’s hair was shorter and Misfit’s hair was longer.

I’m not gonna lie, I have never understood the shot of the big guy in the red suit running. Other than that, this video is sick.

You knew we had to give the females in rap some love.

Here’s Salt N Pepa doing there thing on SNL in 93.

Don’t worry Spinderella, I know your name is NOT Susan.

Ok maybe it’s a little obvious but this song was an absolute banger when it dropped and for a LONG time after. The crowd and their awkwardness makes this video for me. Black Sheep on Arsenio right after their album was certified gold.

Some more classic material by Naughty By Nature. This one is from the Who’s The Man premiere party, originally aired on MTV.

Treach is on fire. Right from the abstract arm dance he does at the beginning, to him holding the freeze while him and Vinnie go back and forth in the third verse.

sleep if ya wanna!

Early Onyx footy from what appears to be College Park’s outdoor courtyard..but what is that crazy structure they keep climbing on? R.I.P. Big DS, he drops that God line out of nowhere. It’s like, who let him hold the mic?

The footage from their show at Concert Hall(i think, i was too afraid to go) is the gem of this video. The crowd is SO hype.

Suburb rap new jacks take notice….this is how shows were in Toronto when you were still in kindergarten. It was no joke.
