Ah, Diggity Das.  They just threw any and all random pop culture references and nursery rhymes and street slang in a pot and came out with some of the most unforgettable rap styles on their first album, Dead Serious.  I ran that CD into the ground…my shit was If Only and Loosies(I remember loosies)…who else had a song about having the loose poops?  Crazy.

Here’s some random footage of them outside in a park rapping.

Wu Ain’t Nuthin To Fuck With

Jesus.  I need the whole footage of this show so badly.  Here’s about 1 minute of why rap was the best shit ever when Wu-Tang came out.  Nothing fucks with the energy that they had on that first record.  NOTHING.  Wu-Tang Clan performing on their corner store robbing pantyhose over the face shit at Jack The Rapper 1993.

This is only 2 or 3 levels more hype than when I first heard Protect Your Neck on one of the 2 radio shows here.  They crushed doubles on the first verse.  Smoke on the mic, smoke on the mic, smoke smoke smoke smoke, smoke on the mic like smokin’ joe frasier.

The other 90’s rap posterboy for Obesity finally gets some love on MOD.  Chubb Rock just looks like an absolute giant.  He had a ton of big singles, not just Treat’ Em Right as every Dj who plays a throwback set seems to think.  This footage is him backstage and performing at a huge rap show called Rap Fest ‘92.  The bill was Cypress Hill, Chubb Rock, Pete Rock and CL Smooth and UMC’s.  I think my ticket cost $20-25 bucks and I still have the stub despite the fact that I never went.  I was in Grade 9 at the time and when my boy backed out last minute I stayed at home and listened to the Masterplan Show talk about how hype the show was going to be.

Bizarre Ride

To the staircase.

Pharcyde buggin’ out/talkin’ shit in a random staircase after their first show in Toronto which was absolutely bonkers.  This is when jumping at rap shows/parties was still very much en vogue, and at one point the entire crowd was jumping in unison.  I think it was to “N***a In Charge”, since that was def the most live song from their debut album.

Something tells me that their Rock The Bells reunion tour might not have the same crowd response.  Has anyone caught them yet?  Do they still “got” it?

A Tribe Called Quest - Youthful Expression (LIVE)

One thing that Tribe does best is take a mellow song and turn it into a live performance with mad energy. Another example here.

Youthful Expression always seemed to be one of those chill-out tracks. It’s definitely got a different vibe in this clip.

Phife assuming back up dancer duties on this one.

RazorBlayd- “Razor’s Gruv” (Blast/Justin Entertainment) 1991

There’s only a few things I know about this record:

A)- The shit is SLAMMING.

B)-RazorBlayd was born in Detroit and later moved to Windsor where he honed his skills and eventually moved to Toronto in 1990.

C) He apparently performed one of the tracks off of his album on Electric Circus (*see the explanation of the Toronto phenomena known as EC here)

Shout out to the homie Sipreano on this one.

Time and time again, Busta impresses me with his beatbox ability, the guy can hold it down.

This is a lil promo that Leaders Of The New School did for Slammin Rap Video Magazine.

What made all of LONS’s music videos looks so good? The answer is “film”. I love the fact that they would put in the extra $$$ to shoot there videos on film, it made the difference.

Okay. I really have no words(illest Three Times Dope track) for this video. I don’t know who this guy is or where he is now, but I’ve definitely met about 25-50 versions of him in my short life. You know that random guy who’s always rapping but not really rhyming or making sense and making everyone awkward and uncomfortable.

With no further adieu, I present to you. Cooly D. No, not Schooly D.

Down with Funk Flex was the rapper formerly known as “9MM”.

This is his appearance on Yo! MTV Raps back in 94. Ed Lover, thank you for that classic “pause” moment.

Shouts to DJ Nes on this classic material!
