O-G, Original Gangsta

Here’s what was happening in 1993; Dollar sign ball caps were hot, I was in my senior year in high school, Taz T-Shirts were poppin and Ice-T was droppin his Home Invasion album. I laugh when I see Fab 5 out on west coast, I doubt I am the only one that can see even he feels out of place. Here Fab is interviewing Ice at his now famous crib for the release of T’s album.

There’s 3 words being heavily tossed around over here at MOD. The Party Scene.

This show was the epitome of what a good cable access rap show could and should have been. In this impromptu ‘interview’ we get a glimpse into the (very busy) mind of Funkmaster Flex, 3 album deals and a radio show deep.I love how casually he cuts in the “new” Mary J. joint MID-SENTENCE. Apologies for the quality, but given the rarity, I don’t think we’ll get any complaints.

Robocop Last Year Was A Shock

This one goes out to my man Robbie at Unkut who just last week Twittered his thoughts on ‘The Big Man’ himself, Chubb Rock.

Is it wrong that I’ve never liked a single Chubb Rock joint?

photo teefed from WaxPoetics.Just like the first one.

I don’t even know where to begin with this. How do I respond to one of my favourite groups reaching out to us and LACING us with unreleased gems from their archives? (super strong dookie rope shouts to B-Luv -MOD extended famalam at this point)

Contained here are several radio promo’s spanning from the 80’s to the 90’s and a Stretch & Bobbito freestyle where they PUT IN WORK over “Funky Drummer”. There’s also an unheard-before freestyle ( before they had a deal ) over several Classic breakbeats (Isaac Hayes “Ike’s Mood”,Bob James “Take me to The Mardi Gras”, the Honeydrippers “Impeach the President”) as well as the full version of the Kool DJ Red Alert promo we featured here awhile ago.

If you don’t know about JVC Force, then do the science & math and get up on game over at Unkut, where Robbie did an amazing article on them that’ll most definitely shed some light on the 3 brothers from Strong Island ,and one of the most criminally slept-on groups in rap. I gotta say, I’m glad to see that they never left and finally got their due propers with the rerelease of “Doin Damage” -their blazing first LP.

Who ever thought throwing to videos could be so entertaining? Rocking basically the same get-up as this performance, Black Moon gets their chance to throw down on Rap City.

We Re-Invented The Remix v1.1

amtweb

We’re back at it for 2009.  New username, new post but same theme as v1.0.  Kaewonder and Ace Six are collectively known as the Air Max Thuns, so from now on we will be posting under that username when we go in on a post like this.  We’ve decided that 13 is such a nice round number that we will use this for all of our posts involving audio and commentary, so this is our v1.1 of the best remixes ever.  Of course, there will always be omissions or songs that we forgot.  They’ll be in the upcoming versions, so please post up in the comments and let us know which songs you feel we excluded and why.  Without further adieu, here’s our second foray into the world of remixes.

Just because I see a lot of Toronto and Canadians in general posting in our comments section, i present to you a special live performance of the og female emcee herself, Michee Mee.  Michie repped our city and performed with KRS when he came to town, like a local BDP army reserve or something.  I believe Kaewonder came up on 2 copies of the record they mention on that Wiki within a couple months of each other. Crazy!

The video for this song is already so classic, but this live performance ft king lou on backups(kills it)is basically the ill alternate video now.  Big up to Sean for taping this back in the day and for the constant barrage of videos I’ve had the pleasure of throwing up on here lately.

Wait, is that Spade from Citizen Kane dancing with the ill overall fit?

I’m not going to mention Citizen Kane and not go in but that’s for the AMT to post. Plus, I don’t want to take any shine away from Michie who just murks this whole stage that was used for most Electric Circus performances.

For now, I just uploaded this dope  Mastermind mixtape track called “Scar-City Reprezentativz” from his “tape” 49.  Enjoy that and if this gets a lot of comments, expect more Toronto centric posts coming soon.

RUN DMC On Party Machine

1990 baby. Check out “The Beatles” of rap perform there Teddy Riley inspired track “faces”. I had to let this clip ride out a little at the beginning, just so you can take in some of these dancers. Too much to comment on. DJ Run is really going off.

The second clip has so much going on. We start off with an interview with Run and DMC, and given the context I think Nia Peeples throws down a couple pretty good questions. Then we have Jam Master Jay talking with perhaps the corniest guy in the world.

RIP JMJ.

Let me just get this out of the way. I don’t give a rat’s ass, flying fuck, or otherwise that this video is already on youtube. This song and this particular performance hold enough weight that this could be posted on every blog, facebook page, twitter feed, vimeo, vimby, youtube, whatever and it won’t be boring or played out.

This song is a complete classic from start to finish, and this performance on the Arsenio Hall show(which co-incidentally, Phife gets more props than) doesn’t disappoint. Everyone comes with super high energy and distinct examples of 90’s rap fashion at it’s finest.

Busta rocking the ill “where’s waldo” look, and Phife straight New Yorking ‘em with the white/red uptowns and Dream Team jersey. I have to play favourites here though, since Milo is wearing a Too Black Guys tee again. These guys repped hard for our city’s finest at that time and it’s something that I’ll never forget. I’m sure my man Adrian won’t either.

Here we go, yo.

The What

There isn’t too much I can say about this video…

Notorious B.I.G. ft Method Man - The What (LIVE)

Originally aired on a local NYC show called “The Party Scene” hosted by Lefty Left. This show goes down at the Roseland Ballroom, the whole BadBoy fam is on stage, peep Craig Mack creepin around.

I wont accept an complaints for the quality of this video BTW.

**Bonus video. Puff and B.I.G. being interviewed right after the Murder Was The Case premier. Enjoy!
