With The Puba Frenzy

Ok, it’s time for me to Stan out for a minute.  Grand Puba was my fricking idol when this record came out, and not just because Reel to Reel is an amazing album with a great lead-off single.  His whole steez was just too tight. Here he is crushing a 1992 Polo jacket in Grape Jordan V colours matched up with a plaid visor(they were hot, eff your opinion) and the recently-reissued Air Revaderchi.  I remember my mom’s boyfriend at the time used to rock Girbaud jeans and I would gank his to wear out sometimes because I always saw Puba wearing them.  I basically based my whole style in the early 90’s off of what Grand Puba wore in videos or talked about on record, he was a definite style icon for the early 90’s.

Anyways, enjoy this proper performance of 360(What Goes Around) on In Living Color.  Tommy Davidson clearly likes Grand Puba more than he did Redman.

Yeggity yes!

Here is a clip of Das EFX rocking the original version for “Jussumen” live.

As an added treat, here is the Pete Rock remix (this kills the original)

What do you take me for, huh?

Ha. I just read that Jungle(Nas’s brother, duh)told Busta to go solo when L.O.N.S. were doing well. Turns out he was right of course, but at the same time I wonder how good another 2 or 3 Leaders albums could have sounded.

One of those things we’ll sadly never find out.  Until then, we reminicise with another performance from Party Machine and their big hit, SOBB Story.

Co-incidentally, I’ve recently been peeping vintage or lightly used Saabs from the 90’s online so I’m right with Dinco D when he kicks his tale of auto-woe about Rob.

Summer of 92 was slammin wasn’t it? And the Hit Squad was runnin the summer. I got to see the tour along with Gang Starr in my hometown. Das EFX and their crazy sewer vibe, EPMD ain’t crossin over, you couldn’t hold K-Solo back & Redman was just getting into Akson. Reggie only got 10 minutes on stage at that concert ad he was pissed. You can see some of his rage here. In this clip Tabitha Soren was actually giving some rappers some face time on something other than YO! or a news clip about a hip hopper getting thrown in the slammer.

Part 4 of 5, and the last one will be coming soon.

Rae makes a classic young artist faux pas when he says we won’t see him on the camera once he hits 30, but this is a dope clip regardless.  He discusses how the Wu had planned to hit first as a group, then release solo record and touches on the other ventures they had going at the time.

This performance comes from the Apollo Comedy Hour show.

What a fuckin’ entrance!  Lets his 2 sets of dancers warm up the crowd with some hype dance routines, then just waltz’ing in there like we were making him wait or something.  Big Daddy Kane is too damn smooth.  No way silk suits are going to make a comeback in rap fashion but it’s still dope to see that this was once totally acceptable for a rapper to kit themselves out in purple silk with an open shirt.  As usual it looks like some lip sync fuckery, but you can’t front on the random Arsenio in the crowd shot at the beginning.  Once again, big up to Sean on the footage.
