Pieces of Yo!

In transferring my old VHS tapes to DV, I have come across a few Yo! clips that have just been portions of a show. They are not complete from the opening sequence to the end credits. I have put 3 such clips here. I wish I had the complete episode cause the PE performance is one I have never seen before.

The second clip is Fab 5 at Heavy D’s Big Tyme platinum party. He is joined by Kid of Kid N’ Play, Big Daddy Kane, Johnny Newman of the Knicks & Mark Jackson and his fiancee, who was quick to point out the Heavster was second best to her husband. This is the second time in this clip that a lady wanted to make sure everyone knew the Overweight Lover wasn’t hittin it ala Spinderella.

Finally just a few minutes at the end of one of the weekly countdown shows hosted by Ed and Dre as they are joined by Paul Mooney promoting his album Race. He looks a little zooted if you ask me. And then Heavy D makes a cameo in this clip too.

Here is another clip of guests on the shortened late night version of Yo! This is a gem. Diamond D and the Psychotic Neurotics. In studio to promote Diamond’s first major label joint. A young Fat Joe joins the crew in studio and even gets a little extra attention due to his name. Dr Dre gets the assist for picking up T-Money’s fumble on the “Not Gonna Be Able to Do It” song credit.

Yo! TODAY

By about 1993, Mtv had shortened Yo! down to 30 minutes and put it on after bed time. I think it was on at 11pm or 12am. This was the first signal for the beginning of the end for Yo! These clips are from right around the time of the filming of Who’s The Man. Since the interviews, if you can call them that, are very short, I am trying to fit a few into this post. I love Charlie Brown trying to talk at the same time as Busta when they are in the car at the end of the LONS clip. Again, foreshadowing. In the clip below, I think GURU shows the camera did not intimidate him. Ed is acting goofy and miss a great op for some one-on-one time with 1/2 of Gang Starr. Props to Mtv on the Gangstarr gaff. RIP Ted Demme.

Mad Ice

How fitting on the same weekend that Mad TV wraps up its series, I find this clip of Ice-T making an appearance on the show, years ago. Ice was fully commercialized by this point, cause I am not sure this is the skit you want to be in if you are trying to prove you are an OG. Word up on the original Shaq Daddy jersey & the 7up guy’s appearance in this one.

This is going out to my man Matthew Africa that commented on the Too Short post here. The APG Crew is outta the Bay Area. This came from the PBS Documentary “Rap City Rhapsody”. I somehow was able to scramble down the steps and throw a VHS tape in the VCR and kick my dad off of his tv, when this aired. I only missed the first 2 minutes of this doc. I am so happy to have it digitized now, I can’t believe that I never wore the tape out with as much as I watched it. To all our west coast readers, give us the 411 on APG Crew.

A rare Rick The Ruler appearance on MOD.

Watch MC Ricky D tear down the RapMania stage with Childrens Story. This isnt the first time we have seen him rock over the vocal versions.

What’s In A Name?

Our girl Dee Barnes gets some face time with 3 of rap’s brightest stars in the 1990’s in this segment about the meaning behind their nom(s) de plume.  Personally my favourite moments in this clip are Dee’s excited look on her face when imagining that there might be a sex story behind Mc Hammer’s name, and her realizing that K-Solo’s acronym for his name is in fact “Def”.

Another performance to add to our ever growing collection of Das Efx videos.

This one is pretty dope. Peep the clash of styles for the interview at the end…digit!

The final installment of this legendary segment.

This time we get OK interviewing the UMC’s. For the record, One To Grow On was my joint.

NYOIL, I know you’re out there, you remember this one?

Here Come The Lords

Hey everybody it’s Lords Of The Underground!

Have you ever met anyone who actually LOVED this group? Someone who would ride for LOTUG all day? Do these people exist?

Apparently they don’t exist in this particular Arsenio performance, because there are absolutely NO crowd shots.

What makes this performance unique is that they managed to blend in three tracks from the album, Chief Rocka, Here Come The Lords, and Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time. Peep it.

Lords Of The Underground live on Arsenio.
